The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is a minority institution with ongoing, high-quality research. Although the institution has exceptional, accomplished faculty members who are engaged in the design and conduct of basic and clinical research, research training of minority health professionals is a critical need nationwide. In response, the University of Puerto Rico , Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC) , together with the National Institutes of Health support , has established a successful academic program in clinical research, the post-doctoral Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSc) . In addition, a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research is also available to those candidates interested in acquiring clinical research knowledge that will advance their professional careers and goals. The MSc program’s goal is to increase the number and quality of outstanding Hispanic clinical investigators and to establish research programs that integrate clinical investigations across multiple departments, schools and research institutes in Puerto Rico and collaborations with US mainland researchers. The ultimate goal is to enhance the participation of minority health professionals in clinical and translational research that will have a significant impact on the health of the community, particularly underrepresented minorities. The post-doctoral Master of Science and Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research programs represent a joint effort of the UPR-MSC School of Health Professions (SHP) and School of Medicine (SoM) to offer two multidisciplinary didactic training programs to meet the need among minority health professionals for formalized academic training in the principles of clinical research. These programs have the support of faculty from other academic schools at our campus, such as the Schools of Public Health, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy. The programs have also established partnerships with the graduate clinical research programs at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.), the San Juan Veteran’s Administration Medical Center and other highly recognized academic institutions at the local and national levels to increase the depth and breadth of training opportunities and improve the overall quality of the educational experience. The post-doctoral Master of Science in Clinical Research (MSc) provides scholars the opportunity to integrate a didactic curriculum with a mentor-based research experience to become independently funded and committed clinical researchers. The program’s mission is to promote the development of multidisciplinary clinical scientific teams working in collaboration toward the attainment of two common goals: improvement in quality of life and decrease health disparities. The post-doctoral master program targets specific health conditions of high priority to the Hispanic population as delineated by Healthy People 2010 and based on the mortality and morbidity trends in Puerto Rico. The Scholars research projects focus on the following health conditions: HIV, cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, diabetes, oral health, issues related to aging, mental health/psychiatric disorders, and drug abuse and addiction. The Graduate Certificate in Clinical Research main objective is to increase knowledge competencies in clinical research through completion of a didactic curriculum. Training health professionals from different disciplines in focused, specific, relevant, and critical health issues allows more research interaction; enhance the team approach to problem solving, and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. The MSc program is supported in part by Award number R25RR017589 from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health. The Project Title is : Clinical Research Education and Career Development ( CRECD) in Minority Institutions . For More Information Contact: Estela S. Estape, MT, PhD |
